Unauthorized drone intrusions into airport clearance protection zones can lead to several serious consequences:(The airport clearance protection zone is a designated airspace near airports kept free of obstacles to ensure safe aircraft takeoff and landing, especially during low-altitude flight phases.)
-
Collision with aircraft, which could result in catastrophic outcomes, including loss of life;
-
Interference with pilots'line of sight and radar systems, increasing the risk of flight incidents;
-
Airport closures, disrupting normal flight operations.
Characteristics of Counter-Drone Requirements at Airports
1. Large Defense Area: Drones pose a direct threat to aircraft during takeoff and landing, so counter drone weapons cannot be limited to runways or internal zones. Considering the takeoff and landing paths of commercial aircraft, the required protection area often takes on a "candy-shaped" layout extending beyond the airport perimeter.

2. High Importance of Electromagnetic Spectrum Safety: Maintaining a secure electromagnetic environment is critical to flight safety. The quality of the airport's clearance zone and electromagnetic conditions directly impacts aircraft safety and, by extension, national assets and human lives.
3. Strong Need for Target Localization and Traceability: A key aspect of low-altitude defense at airports is identifying and tracing drone sources. This enables law enforcement to apprehend illegal drone operators, addressing the root of the problem rather than merely driving drones away.
Deployment and Implementation Case of Counter Drone Weapons
The system is deployed based on the characteristics of the equipment and the specific environment of the defense area. Radio signal detection devices are installed at elevated points around the perimeter, forming an irregular quadrilateral. The distance between stations ranges from 500 to 3,000 meters, depending on on-site conditions.
Cloud sentinels and radar units are installed at elevated central points of the defense area, while electro-optical tracking equipment is distributed across high points within the area. Directional and omnidirectional jammers are positioned along the boundary. The control platform is located in the central monitoring and command center, and all front-end devices are networked with it.
The system can detect and provide early warnings for drone targets within a radius of 5 to 10 kilometers. Electro-optical tracking devices can lock onto drone targets within a 1.5 km radius. Directional jammers can interfere with targets up to 2 km away, while omnidirectional jammers provide electromagnetic disruption within a 2 km radius.
